Watercolor and Creativity Workshops

  • Enjoy personal and individualized guidance as you learn watercolor from an experienced teacher, coach and artist who loves the medium.    Using step-by-step lessons and ongoing communications by email, blog, or mail, Helen will introduce you to the basic techniques, concepts and skills you will need to make watercolor your own medium.  She introduces the tools, materials and teaches wonderful techniques you can use to achieve control over a challenging yet fun medium.

Helen teaches Introduction to Watercolor in a way that first teaches you the techniques and qualities of the watercolor medium by doing small abstract technique sheets before tackling paintings that require a lot of drawing.   There are six low stress sections to the workshop that explore tools and techniques of watercolor.  Helen offers plenty of tips and approaches that will support developing your individual style.  You finish the workshop with a final seventh exercise where you are guided through creating your own finished painting using the techniques you have learned.  Work at your own pace and take up to a year to finish.

Whether your challenges are technical or a desire to bring more interesting content or greater passion to your paintings,  Helen will work with you to develop a plan for advancing your artwork from where you are now to where you want to go.  Designed to help you move faster in the direction you are already going, Helen will work with you to advance your art and build your portfolio.  Work at your own pace and take up to a year to finish at least five well defined works.

Drawing the Landscape

This workshop offers a unique approach to landscape drawing that will interest artists of every level of experience. Study techniques will help you draw what you see and feel about a particular scene. Designed to build on the time tested guidance of Victorian social thinker, philanthropist. and artist John Ruskin, who emphasized observation and connections between nature, art and society. He regularly sketched rocks, plants, birds, landscapes, and architectural structures and ornamentation to better see the world he lived in, and you can too.

The four units of the course focus aspects of landscape.  Work at your own pace and take up to a year to finish

Workshop Curriculums

Two 5-week classes that are scaffolded so they can be taken as one 10-week experience in watercolor.

There will be one live-streamed lesson a week with a ‘go at your own pace’ pre-recorded lesson leading up to it posted each Monday.

The Monday pre-recorded lesson teaches you the techniques.

The
Saturdays live-streamed demo will be an opportunity to ask questions and watch Helen do a painting using the techniques you just learned.

Watercolor:  A Fresh Start - 2 days - May 31 & June 1
An introductory watercolor workshop designed for absolute beginners as well as for those who have had some experience painting with watercolor but need a refresher to gain the confidence to start again.  Join Helen to learn or re-learn the basics of watercolor as well as experimental wet-into-wet watercolor techniques that will give you a good enough understanding of the medium to start working on your own.  This workshop does not require a lot of drawing skills.
(May be combined with Advancing Your Watercolor for a four-day intensive).

Advancing Your Watercolor - 2 days - June 2 & 3
A watercolor workshop for intermediate and advanced watercolor painters. Designed as a watercolor workshop for artists with some experience, interested in advancing their creative and technical approach to watercolor painting, and in expanding their subject matter.  Build upon the skills you have acquired to create stronger artworks.  Participants learn how to improve what they already know how to do for the best possible effects.  Learn new strategies for expanding your work to find you own authentic content and approach as an artist.
